These islands are connected by seven bridges. Each of these islands has its own unique characteristics. I’m going to introduce you to the characteristics of each of the six islands. First, on this page, I would like to introduce “Onomichi City”, the start of the Shimanami Kaido Cycling Course.

Onomichi is a city with many slopes. The flat part of Onomichi city is very small, and there is a little flat part from the sea. This hill directs the unique scenery of Onomichi and is a town with many tourists yearly.

Onomichi is famous as a movie theme

The unique scenery with many Onomichi slopes is often featured as a location for Japanese movies.

Japan’s famous director, Nobuhiko Obayashi, is from Onomichi, and often visualizes the scenery of Onomichi in movies.

There are many works by Nobuhiko Obayashi, but there is a movie called “Onomichi Trilogy”. The trilogy is a movie called “Transfer Student”, “A Girl Who Takes Time”, and “Sabishinbo”.

These movies are very popular in Japan.

Let’s go to Senkoji

Senkoji is the most famous sightseeing spot in Onomichi. From this Senkoji, you can see the scenery of Onomichi city.

Senkoji Temple can be accessed using a ropeway. It takes about 10 minutes on the ropeway, and you can go to Senkoji Temple.

After visiting Senkoji, you can walk on a slope with a very nice atmosphere.

You can also get off the ropeway, but the slope is a slope with a very unique Japanese atmosphere, and it is also a location for movies, so we recommend that you get off on foot.

This photo is a ropeway ticket. I bought a round-trip ticket for 500 yen, but it failed. Even if you come down the stairs on the way back, it is not a very difficult slope. It is a very nice staircase, so I think it would be fun to walk down and get down in the mood of a walk. A one-way ropeway ticket costs 320 yen.

You can go through huge stones.

You can enjoy a walk on the slope where you can find Japanese shops on the downhill of Senkoji.

Recommended for cyclists! “ONOMICHI U2” with a stylish cafe and “GIANT shop”

“ONOMICHI U2” is a complex shopping facility where you can enjoy fashionable cafes and shopping with hotels for cyclists from Japan.

Within this facility is the world’s top bicycle brand “GIANT shop”. You can rent a road bike at this “GIANT shop”. However, rental bikes at “GIANT shop” are more expensive than bicycles at public rental cycle terminals.

“ONOMICHI U2” is a very popular spot, so we recommend that you visit it before you start cycling.

The location of the famous Japanese movie “Transfer Student” “Misode Tenmangu”

One of Japan’s famous directors, Nobuhiko Obayashi, is from Onomichi City. Director Nobuhiko Ohbayashi often uses this Onomichi as the stage for film works.

Among the film works directed by Nobuhiko Obayashi, the most famous are “Transfer Student”, “The Girl Who Spends Time”, and “Sabishinbo”, which are said to be “Onomichi Trilogy”. . Some people go to sightseeing watching this movie and go on location.

Among the “Onomichi Trilogy”, the famous movie “Transition Student” location “Misode Tenmangu” is a must-see sightseeing spot.

The famous “Stairs Falling Scene” where the boy and girl of the main character fall from the stairs and the personality and gender of the boys and girls change, was filmed on the 55 steps of stones here in Missode Tenmangu.

The first island of Shimanami Kaido is “Mukaijima”. Let’s go to “Mukaijima” by boat

The first island from Onomichi is called Mukojima. You can get to “Mukojima” by boat from Onomichi. This ship has three routes from Onomichi, and every route runs every 10 to 15 minutes, so it is very convenient.

Students and office workers living in Mukojima commute to Onomichi using this ship. The shipping fee is very cheap, from 70 to 120 yen. (Note that credit cards are not accepted on this ship.)

There is a bridge from Onomichi to Mukojima, but it is very far from Onomichi city area and traffic is heavy and dangerous, so it is common to use this ship to reach Mukojima.
